Challenge
Malnutrition is a leading cause of sickness and death in Cambodia. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, 45% of Cambodians live in moderate or severe food insecurity. And USAID stated nearly 61% of Cambodians live in rural areas, and 77% of rural households rely on agriculture, fisheries, and forestry for their livelihoods. Low agricultural productivity means little surplus to sell as income and low income leads to continued poverty and malnutrition.
Solution
Food security is one of the highest priorities for any human. The most direct route to escape the threat of malnutrition is regular access to nutritious foods. Trailblazer trains rural farmers to use improved modern agricultural practices that increase farming productivity. We provide wells, which gives access to abundant water for irrigation, watering livestock and personal use. We help start-up Farmer Community Groups and chicken farms, which has significantly increased their income at market.
Long-Term Impact
Once Trailblazer has helped families secure clean water and nutritious food, the next step for moving from "survival to sustainability" is to support them in establishing a livelihood. Trailblazer helps rural communities establish a Village Fund enabling farmers to get the capital they need to grow their business such as buying livestock or fertilizer. With their increased productivity, their income grows and they are able to reinvest in better quality seed, more land and equipment.
