Add a Perspective to this Topic Session
Perspectives are simple statements on any perspective or opinion about the Topic. Our goal is to present a wide variety of varying opinions - both for and against a situation - so users can explore and decide on the Topic as a whole.

Suggestions:
► Try to include a variety of Perspectives, including those you absolutely disagree with. The fact that you've added a Perspective doesn't mean you agree with it!
► A Perspective is any point of view. It could be something insightful and inspiring, or blunt and unexpected.
► Don't include backup facts or longer explanations or justifications - use Resources for that.

Before adding a Perspective, please look at those already listed on this page and vote on them.

Resource in The Media view

“Mainstream news and ‘business news’ have effectively morphed over the past two decades as the news is increasingly pitched to the richest ½ or 1/3 of the population. The affairs of Wall Street, the pursuit of profitable investments, and the joys of capitalism are now often taken to be the interests of the general population....The affairs of working-class people have virtually disappeared from the news.” Robert McChesney, Rich Media, Poor Democracy
“There is already speculation that traditional education as a public service is collapsing, and a hybrid of educational high technology and commercial entertainment will eventually become the primary means of ‘educating’ American kids – as prospective workers and potential consumers.” Robert McChesney, Rich Media, Poor Democracy, 47

Resource in The Media view

We no longer have in any real sense a free media. That is big. It couldn't be bigger. The Fourth Estate is defunct. That's the bad news. The good news is that there's a Fifth Estate. It exists in the ether. It's used by people like consortiumnews.com and Wikileaks. It's not able to be controlled by government, corporation, or advertisers. That's the good news, and it really is a new world out there, so what I see is the main task here is to close the open link between the availability of that end of the link with Americans who don't necessarily hear even about the existence of this possibility of learning the truth. They need some way to learn that, hey, good news, this stuff is available, and it's so easy. Almost everybody has a computer, so let's have at it.

The Fair Use Doctrine

The ‘Fair Use Doctrine’ makes it possible for non-profits to distribute previously published material.

"Fair use is a US legal doctrine that permits limited use of copyrighted material without acquiring permission from the rights holders.
"Examples of fair use in United States copyright law include commentary, search engines, criticism, parody, news reporting, research, and scholarship. Although related, the limitations and exceptions to copyright for teaching and library archiving in the U.S. are located in a different section of the statute. Fair use provides for the legal, unlicensed citation or incorporation of copyrighted material in another author's work under a four-factor balancing test.
The term "fair use" originated in the United States.
Fair use is one of the traditional safety valves intended to balance the interests of copyright holders with the public interest in the wider distribution and use of creative works by allowing certain limited uses that might otherwise be considered infringement."
