Never cooperate with the police!

As the daughter of a retired Philadelphia Police Officer, let me share what my father told us growing up; "Never cooperate with the police!" Dad said that he could never figure out what happens to someone who puts on a badge and a gun to go to work. "I've seen great human beings just turn into little storm troopers" he would say. To the cop, an accusation is an excuse to utilize power that no other citizens have. The power to stop someone, physically restrain them, maybe even slap them around a little. Terrorize them. Lie to them. In short, do to them that which is defined as sadistic cheap thrills (especially if the accused is young, female, and/or a hated minority) if done outside the realm of "law enforcement". Dad used to say that in his old neighborhood in West Philly there were two ways to have real power over common citizens. Become a priest or a cop. Either way you get to intimidate people who otherwise would pay you no attention whatsoever. As an emergency room doctor who has treated some of the victims of law enforcement as well as victims of criminals, I urge anyone rustled up by the police, who has no idea what the hell is happening, to just keep silent, say nothing, do not resist even if struck, and wait for a lawyer. Our parochial system of history tells us about Cossacks, Gestapo, and Stasi, while portraying our guys as Andy of Mayberry. Don't believe it!

Police should help people and see everyone as being precious

Instead of urban commandos, we need police who see their job as saving lives, including the lives of those who are mentally unbalanced. We need police who are trained to see all people and all lives as precious. We need police who take the job of cop because they want to help people, not because they were in the military and have experience with handling weapons and thus have an advantage in the hiring process.
