Food corporations and long distance transportation are subsidized
Food from 10,000 miles away be delivered in your local market costing less than a local, fresh apple or banana from only a mile away. We are subsidizing the long distances. By subsidizing export/import we are subsidizing these giant corporations. The global is deregulated and the local is overregulated.

It should nourish people and improve the well-being of the community
“A sustainable food system free from corporate control whose primary goal is the health and well-being of the community, the farmlands, and the water system.” (Occupy Portland) It should not… poison the land, water, workers and consumers, and enrich corporations. Food is a way to nourish people and the planet and a means to safeguard our future.

Industrial farming is a system for poisoning land, water, workers and consumer
It denudes the nation’s topsoil while poisoning land, water, workers and consumers and enriching corporations. It abuses animals. It produces food that makes people inflate like balloons, while millions of others are starving.

The food industry is dominated by corporations who exploit customers
We have virtually no control over the production and distribution of food. The food industry is dominated by multinational companies who for their own profits exploit consumers, workers, the world's natural resources and billions of farmed animals. The way we eat, and even the way we think about food is being manipulated by these powerful institutions and their sophisticated marketing campaigns.”

A sustainable food system for the health and well-being of the community
‘Is contemporary American agriculture a system for nourishing people and providing a livelihood for farmers? Or is it one for denuding the nation’s topsoil while poisoning land, water, workers and consumers and enriching corporations? Defining goals that matter to people is critical, because the most powerful way to change a complex, soft system is to change its purpose. For example, if we had a national agreement that food is not just a commodity, a way to make money, but instead a way to nourish people and the planet and a means to safeguard our future, we could begin to reconfigure the system for that purpose. More generally, if we agreed that human well-being was a priority, creating more jobs would not ring so hollow.”

Supplying people with food should be an act of heroism
“The wonder has always been great to me, that heroism has never been supposed to be in anywise consistent with the practice of supplying people with food, or clothes; but rather with that of quartering one’s self upon them for food, and stripping them of clothes. Spoiling of armour is an heroic deed in all ages; but the selling of clothes, old, or new, has never taken any colour of magnanimity. Yet one does not see why feeding the hungry and clothing the naked should ever become base businesses, even when engaged in on a large scale.” “If you chose to take the matter up on any such soldierly principle; to do your commerce, and your feeding of nations, for fixed salaries; and to be as particular about giving people the best food, and the best cloth, as soldiers are about giving them the best gunpowder, I could carve something for you on your exchange worth looking at. But I can only at present suggest decorating its frieze with pendant purses; and making its pillars broad at the base, for the sticking of bills.”

A mystery in which guests and their host share friendship and gratitude
How can we create the "mystery in which guests partake of the good things prepared and given to them by the love of their host, and in which the atmosphere of friendship and gratitude expands into a sharing of thoughts and sentiments, and ends in common rejoicing"?
