Take this Pledge
Healing, not just curing

Taking a Pledge is agreeing to simple, basic thoughtfulness in a profession. It is a new kind of Hippocratic Oath - a dynamic, active way to think about and decide on what you do and how you operate in your working life.

– Taking the Pledge does not mean that you agree with each (or any) perspectives.
– Decide on each Pledge perspective separately.
– Deactivate the Pledge itself at any time.

Overview
Healing, not just curing

Treat patients as human beings entrusted to your care, not just as clients. Take the health of the whole human being, the community, and the social, political, economic and natural environment into account. Address causes of illness in addition to symptoms. Health care is not just the dispensing of services, not treating patients as consumers. The profit motive should never be primary. Make prices are reasonable, affordable and based on actual costs.

Pledge:

The profit motive should never be primary

Do not serve the interests of insurance companies, drug companies, or corporate medical industries such as hospitals. Ask yourself to what extent is the procedure done because of the profit motive.

Pledge:

Prices should be affordable and based on actual costs

Don't take advantage of the sick. Charge a fair amount, based on what your costs are and what the patient can pay. Prices charged by the medical establishment – by hospitals, doctors, drug companies, etc – are often extremely high, erratic and unequal. Justify the cost in terms of expenditures, average social salaries, actual costs. If costs are out of line, what can you do to keep them fair?

Decide on a Pledge Challenge
Pledge:

Treat the patient as a human being entrusted to your care, not a client

Always respond to the living beings who stand before you. Don't treat the patient like a machine. Listen to your patients. Spend sufficient time with them to find out who they really are. Love and warmth should be restored to the medical and pharmaceutical world.

Add a Perspective to this Topic Session
Perspectives are simple statements on any perspective or opinion about the Topic. Our goal is to present a wide variety of varying opinions - both for and against a situation - so users can explore and decide on the Topic as a whole.

Suggestions:
► Try to include a variety of Perspectives, including those you absolutely disagree with. The fact that you've added a Perspective doesn't mean you agree with it!
► A Perspective is any point of view. It could be something insightful and inspiring, or blunt and unexpected.
► Don't include backup facts or longer explanations or justifications - use Resources for that.

Before adding a Perspective, please look at those already listed on this page and vote on them.
