Project Details

We all know that the goal of business is to make money. There is nothing wrong with making money, but the business person is not only a money maker and does not have to act selfishly all the time. He is also a human being. Any business can carve out a small space in which money is not involved at all. Profit doesn't have to be the sole concern. There is always a possibility of doing something – no matter how small – in which profit is not involved in any way.

What does it mean to set aside a space for meaning? It can be anything at all, as long as it is not just an attempt to get good publicity or some other form of personal benefit. It can be a way to help customers, a place for discussion or community, resources for learning, social services, etc. It doesn't have to be expensive. It doesn’t have to be a normal part of their business (which might decrease their income).

The meaning of One Percent For Meaning

We spend much of the day navigating among businesses. As the economy grows and the number of community and public spaces falls, life becomes more and more sterile. Most interactions involve buying or selling, or the enforcing of a regulation.
Of course, we realize that the goal of business is to make money. In fact, the merchant must provide something of value to the customer, and of course that is why customers turn over their cash. Yet the way we determine value is too narrow.
Businesses are in a unique position to do something significant, in that they often have practical resources at their disposal. They have storefronts, products, employees, or just plain money. Why not take a tiny part of those resources – as little as one percent – for well-being?
When the motive is good, an entirely new climate, which cannot occur within the confines of consumerism, comes into existence. For one moment of the day, a ray of light shines in, and we begin to see each other more clearly. There is no underlying greed, no unfilled need.
It is like going home. It is a safe place for what matters. It is hope for humanity. That is why we call it Haven.

In true commerce there should be occasional loss

“The merchant is presumed to act always selfishly. His work may be very necessary to the community; but the motive of it is understood to be wholly personal. The merchant’s first object in all his dealings must be (the public believe) to get as much for himself, and leave as little to his neighbour (or customer) as possible.”
“In true commerce, as in true preaching, or true fighting, it is necessary to admit the idea of occasional voluntary loss; – that sixpences have to be lost, as well as lives, under a sense of duty; that the market may have its martyrdoms as well as the pulpit; and trade its heroisms as well as war.”

John Ruskin, The Roots of Honour or Unto This Last, 241
