Overview
Bookstores and thrift stores are natural places to create a cooperative, because they may be able to get most of their stock at no cost. Many people are happy to give away used books and clothes for a good cause. If a café is established at the same location, and profits and resources are used for a social purpose, this could be a wonderful local meeting place.

Housing Works pioneered the concept of social enterprise businesses whose profits assist in funding the mission of its parent not-for-profit organization. Housing Works operates several enterprise businesses including acclaimed Housing Works Thrift Shops and the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe.

Together these businesses help provide crucial funding towards Housing Works mission in addition to providing employment opportunities to the community.
Housing Works Bookstore Cafe has established itself as a New York downtown institution and tourist destination for the last decade.
Housing Works Thrift Shops are neighborhood treasures, thriving off the donations from the generous community, our Thrift Shops sell an eclectic collection of clothing, accessories, art, furniture, and homewares at unbeatable prices.
What We Do. For over 25 years, Housing Works has addressed the needs of over 30,000 individuals that other organizations deem “too challenging” to serve. Based on a harm reduction framework, our programs are both holistic and empowering.
Services: Housing. At Housing Works, we believe as a core value that Housing is Healthcare. "Our mission is to provide safe, secure, and stable housing to homeless New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS and/or other chronic health conditions. Coming both from Housing First and Harm Reduction perspectives, after residents have stabilized in their healing Housing Works homes, we will connect them to the life-saving services that they specifically need and will coordinate with their healthcare providers to ensure that all of their needs are met. Housing is available to eligible individuals living with HIV; people of transgender experience living with HIV; single men and women with active substance use issues; HIV-positive single women recently released from a correctional setting; and HIV-positive unstably housed LGBTQ youth (18-24). We also offer supportive, affordable housing for families where the head-of-household is living with HIV."

We need at least one Coordinator, but possibly a group of people, to spearhead this project.
