Money - Work Pledge

Taking a Pledge is agreeing to simple, basic thoughtfulness in a profession. It is a new kind of Hippocratic Oath - a dynamic, active way to think about and decide on what you do and how you operate in your working life.

– Taking the Pledge does not mean that you agree with each (or any) perspectives.
– Decide on each Pledge perspective separately.
– Deactivate the Pledge itself at any time.

How to Explore a Perspective
Relax, focus. Take a step back and look at the Perspective from all sides. Now, zero in at the center!

What is the Bias?
What assumptions does it make? Whose interests does it serve?

What is your Personal Experience?
How does it make you feel? How do your experiences, privileges, and personal interests affect your understanding of it?
Now, enter the heart
▶ Say something good about what you disagree with, even if there are flaws.
▶ Find causes, not symptoms. Ask what lies at the root.
▶ Have respect for people with different views, insights, and priorities!

Select a just vocation

“Do not live with a vocation that is harmful to humans and nature. Do not invest in companies that deprive others of their chance to live. Select a vocation that helps realize your ideal of compassion.”

(Precept 11) See Thich Nhat Hanh, Peace is Every Step, Fourteen precepts of the order of Interbeing.

Take the human consequences into account

Always take the individual and his or her needs and the particular situation into account, including intangible qualities such as compassion, beauty and good. Be willing to recognize differences and make exceptions. The effect on the human being, rather than enforcing rules, should always take priority.
Never enforce a policy without thinking about its implications. Do not leave your personal values at the door!

As job holders we are required to follow instructions and enforce rules. But the requirements of a job are not the whole of our responsibility. We should also try to understand the effects of what we do, and begin to make improvements, even if that means risking our own success or security.
Pay attention to the desires and will of others. Protect the ability to recognize others, especially what is inner and higher in them. This is more important than function and productivity.
Exceptions for the personal, human, and for common sense, should be allowed. Every situation should be addressed on its own terms.
Even when it is necessary to do something uncomfortable there is always a place for being caring, thoughtful, and honest. This requires dialogue with, and accountability to, the individuals, communities and ecosystems with which you interact.

Do not deceive or mislead

Do not make a fake smile or greeting.
Is the place you work fair to employees, to suppliers, to customers? Is it secretive or transparent? Is it authoritarian or humane? Is it manipulative? Does it appeal to greed, envy, or aggression? Does it prey on desire or fear? Does it protect the environment and natural resources? Are prices reasonable?

The product or service you sell should have real value

What is the value of the product or service? Does it satisfies real or artificial needs? Is it truly beneficial? Does it improve the quality of life?

Add a Perspective to this Topic Session
Perspectives are simple statements on any perspective or opinion about the Topic. Our goal is to present a wide variety of varying opinions - both for and against a situation - so users can explore and decide on the Topic as a whole.

Suggestions:
► Try to include a variety of Perspectives, including those you absolutely disagree with. The fact that you've added a Perspective doesn't mean you agree with it!
► A Perspective is any point of view. It could be something insightful and inspiring, or blunt and unexpected.
► Don't include backup facts or longer explanations or justifications - use Resources for that.

Before adding a Perspective, please look at those already listed on this page and vote on them.
